Oversized Holes with Epoxy (HY-200 or HIT-RE-500)

Oversized Holes with Epoxy (HY-200 or HIT-RE-500)

We have a condition where the design engineer mistakenly indicated grout sleeves that were too long resulting in minimal anchor bolt head embeddment in concrete.

To correct, we are considering removing the plastic grout sleeve to get to sound concrete and filling the annulus with either HY-200 or HIT-RE-500 to provide secure the anchor bolt. The epoxy bonding strength to concrete provides well in excess of the strength we need with a 3:1 factor of safety.

Can you provide any guidance regarding any maximum annulus dimensions or recommendations on this concern. The annulus between the anchor bolt and the sound concrete is upwards of 1" (3" OD diameter sleeve on a 1" diameter anchor bolt).

Regards,
Jonathan Jackson, PE

Jonathan,

Hilti does not have any ICC-ES approval for oversized holes in conjunction with an adhesive anchors; however, Hilti has performed some additional testing with HIT-RE 500 V3 in oversized holes (maximum hole diameter of 1.5*d_a).  This bulletin can be accessed by following the link below on the HIT-RE 500 V3 product page:

Let us know if you have any additional questions.

Jonathan:

As noted in our previous response, Hilti has limited test data for oversize holes with our HIT-RE 500 V3 epoxy adhesive.  HIT-HY 200 should not be used for oversized hole applications.  You may want to consider field testing to determine anchor capacity in conjunction with Engineering judgment to evaluate the suitability of a 1" diameter anchor in a 3" diameter hole.
