Why aren't the mechanical fasteners used more often? Are they more expensive?

Brian,
Puddle welding has been around for longer as an approved decking attachment method, so this is typically the default specification for engineers. The raw material cost of a direct fastening pin versus a weld may be more. However, there are added benefits to direct fastening such as
- Installation time savings.
- No limitations in wet/ moist conditions.
- Reduced user fatigue while standing upright.
- No burn throughs.
- No touch-up required with painted or galvanized deck.
- Eliminate fire risks.
- No certified welder required to install.
- Hilti fasteners can be used reliably in all layered sheet conditions including the 4-layer condition.
