How tight do anchors must be torqued for adhesive anchors?

Contractors have asked multiple times what the required torque is for installing adhesive anchors. I understand that adhesive anchors are different than mechanical anchors and don't have an installation torque. In the epoxy ESR reports there is a maximum torque, but contractors want to know a more exact number. What would be an appropriate response to their request of how to install an adhesive anchor appropriately?

Vanessa,

In regards to the torque value for adhesive anchors, the torque is mainly used to fasten or clamp down the fixture to the base material. If you reference the ICC-ES Evaluation Report (ESR), the Hilti Anchor Product Technical Guide, and/or the Instructions for Use (IFU), the value listed for the installation torque will be the maximum torque that can be applied to the anchor system. This is the value that most people will use, as this is the torque value that was used during the testing of the adhesive system. It is important to note that since most of the Hilti adhesive anchor systems are not torque-controlled (excluding the HIT-HY200 and HIT-Z Threaded Rod), the installation torque can be lower than the maximum value; however, it will be up to the engineer or design engineer on the project to calculate that value and verify that the fixture is properly secured to the base material.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact us.

Regards,

Bryan

How can I tell how big the tensile force is applied under a certain torque on HILTI adhesive anchors? I guess there were charts prepared by HILTI before. We need to use the torque to check whether installed adhesive anchors can meet a certain load resistance requirement. Can you please let me know where to find these torque charts from HILTI? Thanks.

Hi Frank,

Depending on which Hilti anchor you are installing, the installation torque can be found in the ICC-ES ESR or the Hilti Product Technical Guide for Anchor Fastening. Hilti anchors were tested with the published installation torque, therefore, the torque is included in the load values shown in the ESR or Hilti Product Technical Guide.
