Dear Ms./Mr.,

Our client have some concerns with the installation of the subject (HIT-HY 200 + HIS-N B7 1/2) system as follow:

  1. Is there any tolerance in regards of "embedment depth (hef)" of the subject sleeve where if it coincide with the rebar into the concrete wall. In saying that, can the threaded sleeve protrude out of the concrete surface about max. 20 mm? If so, does this situation affect the shear and tensile force of the sleeve? Please see attached drawing which may help to visualize their concern.
  2. The subject system is being used for installation of the heavy blast doors. At some locations, we needed to chip the concrete walls in order to achieve the required rough opening. After that, the drilling and sleeve installation is proceeded without plastering the chipped surface. Does letting the chipped surface remain without repair and initiate the subject anchors installation affect the strength of the anchor system?
  3. Can you please confirm that a min 12 mm "thread engagement length (hs)" is sufficient in case of full engagement not possible.
  4. In case the chipped concrete surface where the subject system take in place need to be repaired or filled with mortar, what product and method would HILTI recommend us to use?

Ali,

In regards to your questions:

  1. There is no tolerance when it comes to the embedment depth of the HIS-N Internally Threaded Insert when used in conjunction with HIT-HY200, as the values provided were based on the specified embedment depth. If the sleeve is protruding above the surface of the concrete, there would most likely be reduction in capacity; however, there is no testing available, and this would be outside the approvals for the product. If the sleeve is to be installed like this, it would require the design engineer or engineer of record to use their judgement to verify this application, and onsite evaluation would typically be prescribed.
  2. All Hilti testing was performed in full concrete members, without evaluating the effects of chipped surfaces. Again, this would be up to the interpretation of the design engineer, and an engineering judgment would be needed to evaluate this condition.
  3. As seen from the Technical Information for the HIS-N Internally Threaded Insert with HIT-HY 200, Table 56 (https://submittals.us.hilti.com/PTGVol2/#101/z) states that the minimum thread engagement into the sleeve must be 0.50” (12.7 mm).
  4. Hilti does sell an epoxy grout (CB-G-EG: https://www.hilti.com/construction-chemicals/grouts-%26-concrete-repair/r29202) which could possibly be used in your application.

Hi Bryan, Many thanks for your prompt response.In regards to #4, your proposed Hilti's filler (CB-G-EG) is not available where the installation takes place here in Poland.Therefore, we plan to use a different product that is locally available. There are some products available which provide a min. compressive strength 40 MPa where C30/37 class concrete had been used at the entire building in question.Shortly, can you please advise us if we can use other products than the one you suggested to fill the space due to chipped concrete in some locations the HIS-N inserts protrude out approx. 20 mm.

Ali,

You will not be limited to using a Hilti grout product, and have the option to use a product from another manufacturer. It is important to remember though, that all testing for the HIT-HY 200 and HIS-N B7 Insert was done in a concrete member, and does not have any evaluation using concrete repaired with grout products. Thus, it would be an engineering judgement on your end to verify the capacity of the system using the grout.
