HCA Coil Anchors

HCA Coil Anchors

Regarding the Coil Anchor system, I have several questions

  1. we use 1/2" bolts.
    1. In table 2, it shows allowable concrete and steep capacities.
    2. In the 1/2" row, it talks about nominal embedment but only shows values for 2-3 inches. However, Hilti sells these much longer than that.
      1. What is meant by the nominal embedment? Is it only the part from the tip (point) up 2 or 3 inches? And why would you not always achieve that?
    3. What is meant by the allowable steel strength in the far right column in table 2?
      1. Are people driving these into steel?

Thank you.

Hi Brian,

Figure 1 shows that the total length of the anchor is made up of hs, tfix, and hnom. hs is the height at which the coil is set in the concrete. The attached instruction for use better demonstrates what this hs means. tfix is the fixture of the thickness. hnom is the nominal embedment where the coil sits in the concrete after it is set. The longer anchors are available to accommodate thicker fixtures as shown in Section 3.3.10.5.

These anchors are only tested to be installed into concrete. The steel strength is referring to the strength of the anchor itself. After the reduction factors of Table 4 are applied for the allowable loads based on spacing and edge distance, this value should be compared to the steel strength to determine if the concrete or steel will be controlling the capacity of the anchor.
