Effective embedment vs nominal embedement

Would you please go over effective embedment vs nominal embedment for post-installed anchors? When torque is applied, does it draw the bolt upward to the effective embedment location?

Dear Zach,

Well this is a good question. Regarding the difference between effective embedment and nominal embedment, effective embedment is the overall term to describe the depth at which the forces in the anchor are transferred into the concrete. For post-installed mechanical anchors, nominal embedment will refer to the depth at which the bottom of the anchor rests in the drilled hole. In general, for the installation of mechanical expansion anchors, the anchor is placed to the bottom of the drilled hole. When the installation torque is applied, the anchor is drawn up into its wedges which should then be acting at effective embedment. Don't hesitate to contact us if there is anything else we can do for you.

All the best
