ACI Code and ETAG Compatibility

ACI Code and ETAG Compatibility

I did review a building plan designed with ACI 318 code. There is a new proposal to enhance the capacity of the building. I did design a steel sections anchored to the existing structure for strengthening purpose.

While I'm using Profis to look out for the suitable products. I noticed that product numbers is more if I choose ETAG Method or HIT Method than ACI Code. It's acceptable to design anchors with ETAG Method instead of ACI Code?.

Regards,
Mohammed

Mohammed,

The determination of the design criteria will be based on your Building Code requirements where your project is located.  In the United States, ACI 318 Anchoring-to-Concrete provisions are the formally recognized design standard for which designs are based on; however, an engineering judgement can be used to reference "“Alternative materials, design and methods of construction and equipment,” as noted in Section 104.11 of the 2015 IBC, if a different design method is used by the designer (reference https://ask.hilti.com/questions/why-esr-approval-is-needed-for-design/dvhecy for more inforamtion).
