1 Hr Fire Rated Stairway Detail

1 Hr Fire Rated Stairway Detail

We are building 2-1 hr rated stairways for a commercial project in Raleigh NC (UL 419). The issue we are having is there is not enough space between the stair stringer and metal studs for the 5/8" drywall to pass through for a continuous fire rated assembly. Our plan is to fire caulk where the drywall and stringer meet on both sides of the stringer but we can not get approval to do this until we submit a detail showing this can achieve our 1 hr rating.

Is there a detail that out there I can use? I am open to alternate solutions as well.

Good afternoon,

We can address your applications through an engineering judgment which will be a detail showing your exact application with the firestop components to maintain the stated ratings.

Please see attached for HILTI engineering judgment request form. Please fill out the form and email the completed form with any additional details to usfirestopeng@hilti.com

The typical turnaround time for our engineering judgments is 1-3 business days.

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns please feel free to call or email us.

Thank you for choosing HILTI as your firestop specialist and have a great day.

Regards,
Dakota Reid

Yes they did. They worked through a couple issues with me and we got it figured out. Not sure if I can send you the detail they gave me on here through this app though.

Hello, I just want to point out so that that engineering judgements are required to have project and contractor specific information. With that an Engineering Judgement would need to be created for new applications. Hilti is proud to announce that we launched a new engineering website since the original post, the HILTI CONSTRUCTION PLATFORM (HCP). This platform will be the home for all of your Fire Protection Engineering needs, including Engineering Judgment requests. You can find more information on how to access this new platform here: https://www.hilti.com/ej (US) or https://www.hilti.ca/ej (Canada.) For instructions on how to register along with how to navigate the new platform, please see the attached document: EJ FAQ. Along with HCP, Hilti is excited to announce our new mobile app for all your firestop needs: Hilti Firestop Selector. Using the Firestop Selector app gives you easy access to the Hilti Fire Protection Design Team from the jobsite, on the road, or in the office to request a new EJ, an EJ Revision, or ask a Question anytime, anywhere. You can download the app using the appropriate link below. Regards, Dakota Reid Fire Protection Engineer
