Welding to a plate with rebar anchorage
Can you weld to a plate with rebar anchorage that has been post-installed with adhesive anchors without softening/weakening the capacity of the adhesive?

Hi Tom,
Typically, engineers avoid welding on or near anchors for the following reasons:
- The mechanical properties of the anchor rod could be changed resulting in reduced load capacity.
- The chemical composition of welding area could be altered negatively affecting performance under dynamic loading.
- The corrosion resistance ability could be reduced through the welding operation.
- The combination of different influence factors has not been tested (welding different materials, alternative anchor rod materials, welding methods, welding quality, etc.).
- Welding does not comply with the approvals of mechanical or adhesive anchors.
- For adhesive anchors, welding could negatively affect the adhesive bond due to the conduction of heat through the anchor element.
- Welding could remove the length identification mark.
The engineer on the project will be responsible for deciding if welding is acceptable for their application.
Hope this helps,
Adam
