Component-Based Finite Element Modeling is a means to help assess whether a fixture exhibits rigid or non-rigid behavior. Assuming the inappropriate rigidity for the fixture could lead to unconservative results, for example, if using ACI 318 anchoring-to-concrete provisions to design the fixture anchorage. Furthermore, CBFEM is a great tool for assessing base plates when the design criteria mandates the consideration of prying action or in the case of a fixture with an eccentric profile. This article explains how CBFEM can be used to assist in analyzing a fixture in general, and how the results can be interpreted for anchor design.
