The 2012 International Building Code now requires adhesive anchor installers to complete a certification program. This requirement is also listed in the 2015 IBC.

The 2012 and 2015 IBC, references the American Concrete Institute Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete (ACI 318-11). In ACI 318-11 section D.9.2.2 through D.9.2.4 specific provisions for adhesive anchor systems installed horizontally or upwardly inclined and supporting sustained tension loads, are given. These provisions include requirements for installers to be certified in accordance with the ACI/CRSI Adhesive Anchor Installer Certification program or equivalent.

As of January 2016, 32 states have adopted either the 2012 or 2015 IBC (note that jurisdictions may amend the IBC language, so it is important to check with the local AHJ as to local requirements).

Case Study
The New York City Department of Building adopted the 2012 IBC and began requiring installers to be certified in accordance with the ACI/CRSI Adhesive Anchor Installer Certification program or equivalent.

To meet this new requirement Hilti established the Hilti Adhesive Anchor Installer Certification Program (HAAICP) in the New York City area. On November 9, 2015, the New York City Building department formally accepted the HAAICP program as meeting the “equivalency” requirements for installer certification. This certification program is open to all construction professionals who desire to improve their knowledge in the area of adhesive anchors and/or who seek to fulfill the code requirement for certification. Note that HAAICP qualification as “ACI-equivalent” outside the NYC area is up to the discretion of the local AHJ or project EOR.

The HAAICP was launched in November 2015 with 12 construction professionals participating. Since then attendance has steadily increased and in 5 months Hilti has provided certification to over 100 construction professionals in the New York City area.

To learn more about HAAICP and how Hilti can help you meet your local AHJ requirements please contact your local Hilti Field Engineer or Hilti Technical Service.
