Tentatively Scheduled for December 2021
The building and fire codes that are adopted by Canadian provinces and territories are based on the National Building Code of Canada (NBCC). The last published edition of the NBCC is 2015. The national code committees have spent 2015-2020 reviewing code change requests and submitting draft changes for public review. The 2020 code edition had been originally scheduled for fall 2020 publication. However, due to process delays caused by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, along with some other factors, public release of the new building code is now tentatively scheduled for December 2021.
In an effort to minimize delays in the provincial/territorial adoptions of the "2020" edition of the NBCC, the provinces and territories are to receive restricted advance copies of the code as soon as a finalized version is available. This can allow each province or territory to begin their adoption process prior to the public copy of the code becoming available.
